A little hair ritual I never quite gave up

Back home, getting a blow-dry was simply part of my routine. Every time I washed my hair, I would visit the salon. It was my little beauty ritual: freshly washed hair, a beautiful blow-dry and that lovely feeling of having everything perfectly styled.

Then I moved to the UK, and suddenly my usual routine was not quite as practical anymore.

These days, I still treat myself to a professional blow-dry once a week, but I have definitely had to master the art of styling my own hair between appointments. And while I have become much better at it, nothing quite compares to leaving a salon with beautifully styled hair.

So, when I returned to Guangzhou, I decided to explore the local hair salons.

One of the things I love about China is how accessible beauty services can feel. The variety, the treatments, the attention to detail and the prices I encountered made it very tempting to book an appointment whenever I had a little free time.

I genuinely miss China every day. Naturally, I could not resist finding a few places for a last-minute blow-dry.

Here are my three Guangzhou hair discoveries, what I loved and which experience I would return for.

01. Netto Hair Salon: my favourite everyday hair ritual

For scalp treatments and beautiful blow-dries

If you are looking for a lovely everyday blow-dry in Guangzhou, Netto Hair Salon is one of my personal discoveries.

What made the experience special was that it was not simply a wash and blow-dry. I had a scalp treatment and massage, followed by a Shiseido hair treatment and professional styling.

And the scalp massage? Absolutely wonderful.

The scalp treatment I would happily book every week

The massage was deeply relaxing, particularly around my scalp and temples. Afterwards, my face felt refreshed, almost as though I had had a little mini lift.

Of course, a scalp massage does not literally lift the face, but the release of tension and refreshed feeling were lovely. It is the kind of experience I would happily incorporate into my weekly self-care routine.

If you are booking a similar treatment, ask exactly what it includes. Some scalp services focus on cleansing, while others incorporate massage, conditioning or a more elaborate head-spa experience. Personally, the massage was what made this appointment so memorable.

The Shiseido treatment and blow-dry

After the scalp massage, I had a Shiseido hair treatment. My hair felt beautifully soft and smooth afterwards.

Then came the blow-dry. The styling was exactly what I wanted, and the best part was that it lasted for days. For someone who loves freshly styled hair but does not want to spend every morning reaching for a hairdryer, that is a wonderful result.

The staff were lovely and spoke English during my visit, which made communicating my preferences much easier. They offered complimentary drinks, and the entire appointment felt welcoming and relaxed.

My personal verdict: 10/10.

02. Shining Hair Salon: a beautiful haircut without losing the length

For haircuts, styling and an elevated experience

Shining Hair Salon was another wonderful discovery during my time in Guangzhou. During my visit, the salon was on the seventh floor of the Jumeirah Hotel in Tianhe District and offered the more elevated setting I was looking for.

I decided to book a haircut, massage and blow-dry.

Now, if you are anything like me, you will understand that getting a haircut can be a slightly stressful experience. I love having fresh, healthy-looking ends, but I absolutely do not want to lose the length I have worked so hard to maintain.

There is nothing worse than asking for a little trim and leaving with considerably shorter hair than you expected. Thankfully, that was not my experience here.

A haircut that respected my length

The stylist understood exactly what I wanted. I asked for a fresh haircut while keeping my length, and that is precisely what I received.

My hair looked beautifully refreshed, with a polished finish and natural movement. The experience also included a lovely massage, followed by professional styling.

And the blow-dry was beautiful: smooth, full of movement and perfectly styled without sacrificing the length I wanted to keep.

What impressed me most was the team's attention to detail. They listened to my preferences, understood the result I was hoping for and delivered exactly that. I left feeling that my hair was in very capable hands.

A little tip if you are particular about your haircut

Whenever I visit a new salon, I like to be very specific about how much length I am comfortable losing. If you are growing your hair, show the stylist exactly where you would like it trimmed before they begin.

A reference photograph can also help communicate the finish you are hoping to achieve, particularly when travelling somewhere you do not speak the language. At Shining, I was delighted that my preferences were understood.

My personal verdict: 10/10.

03. Moc Hair Salon: a beauty stop between shopping and nails

For a convenient beauty day in Guangzhou

One of my favourite things about exploring beauty in China is how easily you can turn an ordinary afternoon into a little self-care ritual: a little shopping, a nail appointment and a beautiful blow-dry. My idea of a perfect afternoon.

Moc Hair Salon is a convenient option to research when planning exactly that. It has been listed inside Guangming Plaza on Xihu Road in Guangzhou's Yuexiu District, placing it well for a beauty appointment during a shopping day.

What I like about the location

You do not always want to spend half your day travelling across a city for a hair appointment. Sometimes, you simply want somewhere convenient where you can fit in a little beauty maintenance between other plans.

Moc's reported location makes it an interesting option for combining a hair appointment with shopping and a nail appointment in the surrounding area. For anyone who loves planning an entire beauty afternoon, I would keep it on the research list.

A little more information before booking

This is not a detailed treatment review: unlike Netto and Shining, my Moc notes are based on research rather than a personally reviewed appointment.

The public review sample I found was too small to treat as proof of consistent service. I would check recent customer photographs, confirm the treatment menu and price, and verify the current address before booking.

04. How I choose a salon when travelling

After trying beauty services in different cities, I have realised that a little preparation makes the experience much more enjoyable. I love discovering new salons, but I also want to avoid leaving an appointment disappointed.

One useful discovery for researching salons in China is Dianping, where business listings and customer photographs can help you explore styles before deciding where to book. Visual references are especially helpful when choosing a stylist in a new city.

05. Is getting your hair done in Guangzhou worth it?

One of the reasons I loved exploring Guangzhou's beauty scene was the value I felt I received. Compared with my usual routine in the UK, the prices I encountered made professional styling feel much more accessible.

When a salon includes a relaxing scalp massage, beautiful products and a blow-dry that lasts for days, the experience feels even more worthwhile.

I do not have my exact receipts for these appointments, so I will not give you prices that might be inaccurate. I would recommend confirming the total cost before beginning a treatment, particularly if you are adding a scalp massage or conditioning service.

For me, the experience was not simply about the price. It was the combination of attentive service, beautiful results and the pleasure of taking a little time for myself. Guangzhou certainly delivered.

If I could bring one beauty ritual from Guangzhou back to my everyday life in the UK, it would be the scalp massage and blow-dry combination.

Netto Hair Salon gave me a lovely everyday experience, with a relaxing scalp massage, Shiseido treatment and beautifully styled hair that lasted for days.

Shining Hair Salon was my choice for a haircut. I loved that the stylist respected my length and finished the appointment with a beautiful blow-dry.

And Moc Hair Salon is a convenient option to research when planning a little shopping-and-beauty afternoon.

Would I return to Guangzhou for another hair appointment? Absolutely.

I miss the convenience, the treatments and the pleasure of being able to make a professional blow-dry part of my routine. Sometimes, the simplest beauty rituals are the ones we enjoy the most.
