Beauty Sales Representation vs Distribution: Which Model Fits Your Brand?

Sales representation and distribution can both help a beauty brand reach professional buyers, but they assign commercial and operational responsibility differently.

Sales representation

A representative develops buyer opportunities on the brand's behalf. Work may include account selection, personalised introductions, follow-up, sample coordination and reporting. The brand generally remains responsible for prices, contracts, invoicing and fulfilment unless the written scope says otherwise.

Distribution

A distributor generally purchases products at an agreed wholesale cost and resells them to its accounts. Territory, exclusivity, forecasts, minimums, stock ownership, returns and compliance responsibilities should be defined in writing.

How to choose

Representation can suit a brand testing demand while retaining control of customer contracts. Distribution may suit a brand with proven demand, sufficient margin and the documentation and stock needed for local resale. Neither model removes the need for reliable commercial information.

Resolve these questions

  • Who sells to and invoices the buyer?
  • Who owns stock?
  • Who approves discounts?
  • Who manages import, delivery and returns?
  • How are fees, margin or commission calculated?
